Coast to Coast
Hiking along Wainwright's coast to coast walkOverview
The route starts from St Bees and ends in Robin Hoods Bay. I’m starting on the 18th of April and will reach Robin Hood’s Bay on the 28th (which will be my 50th birthday). The numbers in circles show where I’ll start each day.
Campsites are booked for every night of the trip. I’ll be carrying everything I need but hope to keep my backpack under 10kg (including food and water) edit – pack size nearer to 15kg!!
I used the book “Trekking the Coast to Coast Path” from Knife Edge Outdoor Guidebooks to plan the trip. I have made a few changes as I would prefer to stay at campsites rather than pub beer gardens so there are a few excursions from the path. However, I always plan to walk back to the coast to coast path at the point I left it so that I’ve completed the whole walk.

Disaster in camp
I was just boiling the water for my last meal. I stood up to put my coat on and the wind blew my chair onto the stove and burnt a big hole in the fabric of the chair. Chair ruined. I then finished boiling the water and poured it into the food packet and it leaked. Not...
I found that quite difficult
15 miles I figured would be easy. I stupidly didn’t relished how much climbing there would be. At some points it reminded me of what the kids used to call “rock climbing woods”. I’m probably milking it but I found it difficult. I kept on going the wrong way on the top...
First day summary
I was really nervous in the morning. Not sure what of but nervous nevertheless. I felt like I shouldn’t be doing the walk I think so was looking for the catch. Probably set off a bit later than I should have but got going by about 11:30. It’s a great view along the...
Next time take the low route
At the top to Red Pike. 5g reception here - nothing before now. Really windy. Think the view was worth it but not sure - could have got the same picture from the internet. Heading along the ridge now. Hoping not to fall off!!
Pack is heavy – carrying too much wine or water
Just decided to stop for lunch. I’ll do a summary of the day later when I’ve got more time. Just about to climb up Dent hill so a little behind schedule. Started late though and the climb out of St Bees was steep. Going to press on now. Although quite comfortable just...
The day before
Arrived at the Premier Inn Hotel in Whitehaven. The hills / mountains look amazing although we’ll see if I’m so fond of them when I’m walking trying to climb one. Just working out how to fit all the stuff in my rucksack. Wondering how much gear I’ve...
