Coast to Coast
Hiking along Wainwright's coast to coast walkOverview
The route starts from St Bees and ends in Robin Hoods Bay. I’m starting on the 18th of April and will reach Robin Hood’s Bay on the 28th (which will be my 50th birthday). The numbers in circles show where I’ll start each day.
Campsites are booked for every night of the trip. I’ll be carrying everything I need but hope to keep my backpack under 10kg (including food and water) edit – pack size nearer to 15kg!!
I used the book “Trekking the Coast to Coast Path” from Knife Edge Outdoor Guidebooks to plan the trip. I have made a few changes as I would prefer to stay at campsites rather than pub beer gardens so there are a few excursions from the path. However, I always plan to walk back to the coast to coast path at the point I left it so that I’ve completed the whole walk.

Latest news from my Coast to Coast Walk
The best sleep
A really great last night in camp. I had the place to myself and didn’t really do anything. It rained over night and being in a warm dry tent whilst hearing the rain outside made sleeping easy. I’m looking forward to the final walk today. I do want this to end and I...
At least I know I’m going the right way
I’ve crossed the M6 - feels like a milestone
Pod was the right decision
Raining hard today so I got really lucky with the pod (or dog kennel as someone put it). I was going to leave early today but I’ve changed my mind and will leave at 9. The rain is forecast to stop at 2pm so hopefully I’ll dry off a bit when I’m walking. I’m having my...
Oh, and finally, it was so windy on the top of the passes
I’m not ashamed to say at one stage I got blown over. Well a little bit ashamed. No one saw though. Views were still nice. Unlike my legs
I’ve got a confession
So I arrived the the Crown pub in Shap where I was due to camp. I was going to rush to put up my tent because it was due to rain and the landlord offered me an upgrade to a pod. I said no, because it seemed like wimping out. Anyway, this is what I’m sleeping in...
The end of the Lake District is in sight
Gerald just told me it’s going to be windy so he’s left already
Apparently this would have been the highest part of the walk if I’d not done the alternative high routes previously (yes - lesson learnt!). So I’m going to get a move on I think because that last climb yesterday was much tougher than I expected and this one will be...
Late day
So the climb was bigger than expected. I really should have done more research! Very windy at the top as well. The views at the top were nice though. I didn’t make it to the campsite until 8:30pm so missed dinner but had a Magnum ice cream and 2 packets of crisps for...
Last climb of the day
Really tired!
Piles of rock lead the way (sometimes)
In this case I think they’re correct. Just did what I thought was proper climbing. Maybe not to a climber but it was to me. A little scary with my rucksack. Saying that, if I can do it anyone can. I think I’m on there somewhere.
