Coast to Coast

Hiking along Wainwright's coast to coast walk

Overview

The route starts from St Bees and ends in Robin Hoods Bay. I’m starting on the 18th of April and will reach Robin Hood’s Bay on the 28th (which will be my 50th birthday). The numbers in circles show where I’ll start each day.

Campsites are booked for every night of the trip. I’ll be carrying everything I need but hope to keep my backpack under 10kg (including food and water) edit – pack size nearer to 15kg!!

I used the book “Trekking the Coast to Coast Path” from Knife Edge Outdoor Guidebooks to plan the trip. I have made a few changes as I would prefer to stay at campsites rather than pub beer gardens so there are a few excursions from the path. However, I always plan to walk back to the coast to coast path at the point I left it so that I’ve completed the whole walk.

Plodding along

Plodding along

I’m going really slow today but it’s pretty flat and easy going. I should be at the campsite at a reasonable time despite the long distance today. Running a bit low on food though. The guy at the pub made me a cup of tea this morning which was kind. Set me up for the...

I think they’ve easily got four more days in them

Lots of miles to do today but fairly flat so I don’t think it’ll be like day 6. The husband of the landlady here told me to keep focused as even though the lakes and dales are hard this next bit is long and boring. I’ll heed his advice. Anyway, despite that I’m...

What a difference a day makes

What a difference a day makes

Everything was good today. I was worried first thing as my toes were hurting and my knee was stopping me from walking properly. A bit later, pain killers kicked in, toes all strapped up, and everything was fine. The walk was nice and easy, every step wasn’t painful, I...

And, as if by magic

I’ve just got into Richmond and was really craving a Greggs. Plus I knew I needed more plasters and some Ibuprofen. Walked into the centre and saw this. I’ve been a little greedy but I’m hungry. On a side note - Richmond seems nice. I’ve only got about 3 miles to go...

Just stopping for a rest and the rain to pass

I bumped into a nice couple from Atlanta. When I mentioned about my knee hurting but that I’d get something for it in Richmond they gave me some Ibuprofen. So kind. Feel great now. Trying to remember to take my time today. It’s not far and I need to be ok for...

Heading to just past Richmond today. Only 13 miles and fairly flat (apparently just some undulation) so going to take my time and recover. My knee hurts but Richmond is a small town so I’ll get some Ibuprofen there. Happy today

Made it to Grinton and another confession

Made it to Grinton and another confession

Totally messed up with planning this leg. Very long and also lots of climbing. The highest combined climb of the trip. Luckily I realised the night before so planned to leave early. The first 10 miles went really well and even though the second 10 were extremely tough...

Early arrival (for me)

Early arrival (for me)

Made it to Kirby Stephen by about 6pm so I could take my time setting up and getting a few things dry. I’ll be honest, the views in the lakes are more spectacular but I still enjoyed the rolling hills today. Especially as there was far less climbing. I don’t think I...
