Coast to Coast

Hiking along Wainwright's coast to coast walk

Overview

The route starts from St Bees and ends in Robin Hoods Bay. I’m starting on the 18th of April and will reach Robin Hood’s Bay on the 28th (which will be my 50th birthday). The numbers in circles show where I’ll start each day.

Campsites are booked for every night of the trip. I’ll be carrying everything I need but hope to keep my backpack under 10kg (including food and water) edit – pack size nearer to 15kg!!

I used the book “Trekking the Coast to Coast Path” from Knife Edge Outdoor Guidebooks to plan the trip. I have made a few changes as I would prefer to stay at campsites rather than pub beer gardens so there are a few excursions from the path. However, I always plan to walk back to the coast to coast path at the point I left it so that I’ve completed the whole walk.

Sometimes being slow is better

Sometimes being slow is better

Finally made it to Robin Hood’s Bay. Pretty dreary weather all day and suddenly the sun came out for the final couple of miles. If I was quicker I would have missed it. So, all done a dusted. Met up with my Uncle John for a bit which was really nice and then Jenny met...

The best sleep

The best sleep

A really great last night in camp. I had the place to myself and didn’t really do anything. It rained over night and being in a warm dry tent whilst hearing the rain outside made sleeping easy. I’m looking forward to the final walk today. I do want this to end and I...

Disaster in camp

Disaster in camp

I was just boiling the water for my last meal. I stood up to put my coat on and the wind blew my chair onto the stove and burnt a big hole in the fabric of the chair. Chair ruined. I then finished boiling the water and poured it into the food packet and it leaked. Not...

I found a bench and it’s got my name on it

So I felt it rude not to sit down. Time for a rest anyway. I think I’m off the moors now. The scenery has changed beyond recognition. It’s gone from one extreme to another. Scene about 2 hours ago Scene now I’m taking it really easy today. Just enjoying the...

A day of two very different halves

A day of two very different halves

I had just under 20 miles to cover on day 9 and I was a little concerned about getting to the pub in good time (I planned to camp in their beer garden). The morning was quite hard work but very rewarding. Lots of climbing then descending and then straight back into a...

First day on the moors

First day on the moors

Should be nice today. I’ve gone out of my way to buy food and now heading into the Clevedon Way. Nice footpaths and good signs. Should be good. 20 miles to cover again though.

Remember to eat

Remember to eat

Day 8 was pretty much walking across farmland to get to the moors. Just one last climb near the end to get to the campsite. I really messed up with food. I didn’t have enough to eat and it caused me to be more tired and not as happy generally. You don’t realise it’s...

Are the moors getting nearer?

Are the moors getting nearer?

I think I’m paying the price today for walking in April. It’s a little muddy! I’ve been super lucky with the weather though so I think on balance I’m up. On we go…
