Wakey wakey
An alarm was going off on the reception building so I poked my head out of my tent to see what was going on. Selfishly I was wondering if it was on fire because my battery bank was in there and I didn’t want to lose it. Fortunately it was just a burglar alarm,...
Secret places
An amazing side to walking the path is that you find, and see, places that other people don’t get to. I find it fascinating that, for example, the beach at Perranporth is absolutely rammed with people, but I get to walk around a headland here and see several isolated...
Control those emotions
I got caught out once. It was after my Grandma died. She was, I think, 83 years old and had been suffering quite badly with a form of dementia. It was pretty tough for my parents in those last few years who were trying to help her by putting various things in place,...
Worth the effort
I’ve been wondering all day how I’d start the post. Would I talk about the weather at the start, the things that upset me, the things that made me happy. It got to about 8:15pm and I decided I’d walked enough for the day and it was time to set up camp. I looked to my...
Future Ben should be grateful
I could have stopped quite a bit sooner today. I saw a few good pitches as I was walking beside Loch Lomond and could easily have stopped. The thing is, I’d been quite lazy today. I didn’t get moving until 10am and then kept on distracting myself by things on the...
Rules are there to be broken
But not by me. Well not today anyway. I knew that camping around most of Loch Lomond and on Conic hill was not allowed. That was the reason I decided to book a campsite for the first night. It was also the reason why I had to cover over 23 miles today. So imagine my...
She told me so
Jenny has been saying to me for the last few weeks that I should really try out my new rucksack. She said, “put some stuff in it and go for a walk”. I said, “good idea, I might”. Well I didn’t. Part of the reason was that I didn’t want to use it, find I didn’t like...
Highland Hiking – The Plan
I will walk the West Highland Way in April, wild camping where permitted. Have a day off in Fort William, and weather dependant, climb Ben Nevis (so not really a day off). Finally I will walk to Inverness along the Great Glen Way. This ticks all boxes plus a bonus box…
Go west, then east a bit
The path from Lamorna carried on in the same vane as it’d arrived. Really slippy, lots of polished rocks to climb, and complex parts to navigate. It was a really fun path but not one you could rush. The rocks are so smooth and worn that they seem almost metallic. Unfortunately when it’s wet this makes them very slippy. I knew it was about 10 miles to Lands End and at this rate I wouldn’t be there any time soon.
